Footballers Defeated By Kildare In O'Byrne Cup

Kildare had eight points to spare over Longford at Newbridge in the O'Byrne Cup First Round on Sunday last. The visitors started brightly, but Kieran McGeeney's side turned in a stirring second-half display and kicked some delightful points to win 0-16 to 0-8 and thus Longford now go into the O'Byrne Shield Competition.

Leinster Minor Football Champions Presented With Their Winners Medals

The successful Longford minor footballers, 2010 Leinster Minor Football Championship winners were presented with their Leinster winning medals on Sunday, 2nd January last at Backstage Theatre Longford Slashers by Leinster Council Chairman Seamus Howlin and by Longford man and Leinster Council Vice-Chairman Martin Skelly. Other speakers on the night included Longford County Board Chairman Pat Cahill, Minor Board Chairman Euegene Quaine and winning manager Ciaran Fox

Three New Officers Elected At Annual Convention

The 2010 Longford County Board Convention was held on Thursday (9th December) at Aras Ui Bhriain Pearse Park and on the night three new officers were elected to the County Senior Board for 2010.

In the main contest on the night for the top position of Chairman, Carrickedmond’s Pat Cahill defeated, for the second year running, Brendan Gilmore of Rathcline and will now serve his fourth year in the top position.

In one of the surprise results on the night, Cyril O’Connor of Kenagh defeated former County Secretary and outgoing Development Officer Seamus Quinn for the position of Development Officer.

Michael O’Sullivan of the Sean Connolly’s club was elected to the position of Irish and Cultural Officer when replacing Margaret Farrell of St. Patrick’s Ardagh, who had completed her five-year term.

Emmet Óg clubman Gerry Hagan was elected to the position of PRO when replacing the outgoing John Duffy of Dromard, who also had completed his five-year term. Gerry defeated Benny O’Brien of Longford Slashers after a second count while Deniese O’Flaherty of St. Mary’s was eliminated after the first count.

In the final election of the night, Frank Kiernan was returned as Central Council Delegate for another year when defeating Seamus Quinn of Dromard for this position.

Pat Donnelly of Fr. Manning Gaels returned unopposed as Vice-Chairman, Anthony Dooner (St. Brigid’s Killashee) and Eamon Reilly (St. Munis Forgney) returned unopposed as Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer respectively.

Garry Brady of the Fr. Manning Gaels club returned unopposed as Coaching Officer while Eugene Quaine of Carrickedmond returned unopposed as Youth officer/Minor Board Chairman.

Michael Carrigy (Sean Connolly’s) and John Greene (Mostrim) both returned unopposed as Leinster Council Delegates.

Granard/Ballymore capture ‘B’ Football Championship title

Granard/Ballymore were crowned the 2010 Sealtec Minor ‘B’ (13-A-Side) Football Championship winners on Sunday last at the Abbeylara grounds when they defeated a gallant Carrick/Sarsfields in the re-fixed Replay.
